New EU Vision for Agriculture and Food to Be Unveiled in February
On February 19, European Commission Vice-President for Cohesion, Raffaele Fitto, is set to present the new EU Vision for Agriculture and Food. This announcement was revealed in the latest agenda of the meeting of the College of Commissioners dated December 3. Although the Commission's agenda may change, this February date aligns with President Ursula von der Leyen's commitment to unveil the vision within the first 100 days of her new mandate, alongside the anticipated Clean Industry Plan.
Fitto's responsibilities include enhancing the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of the food and agricultural sector, providing guidance to the EU Agriculture Commissioner, Luxembourg's Christophe Hansen.
The new EU Vision will draw directly from the recommendations formulated during the Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture, a forum launched in January by the President of the European Commission aimed at addressing the farmers' protests that have recently swept across Europe. This vision will lay the groundwork for the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with a proposal expected from the European Commission this summer.
Central to the strategy will be the pressing questions of how to ensure a fair standard of living for farmers and how to guarantee the sustainability of agriculture within planetary limits. Additionally, the vision will consider measures for simplification and reciprocity in trade agreements. With these considerations, the European Commission aims to strike a balance between the needs of farmers and the demand for sustainable agricultural practices.
