New Pandas Arrive in Washington: Symbol of Friendship between China and the US
After months of anticipation, the US capital is finally welcoming new pandas from China. The Washington Zoo recently announced the arrival of two pandas, Bao Li and Qing, who are expected to reach Washington by the end of the year. These two two-year-old pandas, a male and a female, are on loan from China, with an agreement that is valid until 2034. In case the panda pair were to have offspring while in Washington, the cubs would have to be returned to China by the age of four.
First Lady Jill Biden described the event as a historic moment for the US capital and in a joint video with the zoo shared on the platform X, she announced the official return of the pandas.
Six months ago, the Washington Zoo had to bid farewell to three pandas as their lease agreement had expired. The departure of these beloved bears was emotional for many zoo visitors, particularly the younger ones, as they were among the main attractions at the zoo. Over the years, the latest panda pair had several babies, causing great joy among visitors.
Pandas are renowned as symbols of friendship between China and the countries they are sent to, representing a form of 'panda diplomacy' that China has employed for many years. These black and white bears, mostly native to the province of Sichuan, are usually leased by Beijing to friendly countries to foster relationships. The relationship between the US and China has faced strains recently, with unresolved issues and tensions escalating last year.
However, a personal meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping last November has somewhat thawed the relations between the two countries. Shortly after this encounter, President Xi hinted at the possibility of sending new pandas to the USA, signifying a goodwill gesture amidst the ongoing challenges. The arrival of Bao Li and Qing in Washington stands as a reminder of the enduring connection and diplomatic ties between China and the US, encapsulated by the cherished pandas symbolizing friendship and cooperation between nations.
