Nine Arrested in Canary Islands Corruption Case Involving Police Officers

The National Police have taken significant action in the ongoing investigation into the alleged corruption scandal known as the Mediador case, commonly referred to as the Tito Berni case. In a recent crackdown, nine individuals have been arrested in the Canary Islands, among them three members of the police force, including retired inspector Francisco Moar, who originally initiated the investigation.

According to police sources confirmed to El HuffPost, the detained officers include a chief inspector and two retired officers. This group had previously been embroiled in a contentious back-and-forth of accusations regarding the handling of evidence related to the high-profile Tito Berni investigation, which centers on former PSOE deputy Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo.

The investigations are being conducted by the Internal Affairs unit of the National Police and relate to an ongoing court case in Arona, Tenerife. This case encompasses serious allegations, including drug trafficking, money laundering, bribery, document forgery, and organized crime. It is important to note that the investigations have been declared secret, indicating the sensitivity and complexity of the case.

The Mediador, or Tito Berni, corruption scheme came to light in February 2023 after a series of arrests throughout various provinces, including the Canary Islands. Allegations suggest that public procurement advantages were offered to entrepreneurs in exchange for bribes, allegedly orchestrated by entrepreneur Marco Antonio Navarro Tacoronte.

As this case continues to develop, it highlights the critical nature of transparency and integrity within both law enforcement and governmental structures in Spain. With multiple arrests and ongoing investigations, the scope of the allegations raises serious questions about systemic corruption and the need for reform.
