Norwegian Royal Family Faces Health Challenges Amidst Controversy
On Tuesday, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway candidly addressed the pressing health issues surrounding his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who has been battling pulmonary fibrosis since 2018. During an event at the University of Oslo, Haakon expressed his concerns, stating, "The Crown Princess is severely ill, and I think her condition has worsened a bit lately. I am concerned about her health. She uses oxygen daily, and that helps her a little." This forthright statement came in the wake of a confirmation from the Norwegian royal house that Mette-Marit may undergo a transplant in the future due to the progressive nature of her illness. However, Haakon mentioned that the timing of the procedure remains uncertain and is dependent on medical assessments, adding, "It is a medical issue. They are the ones who decide when it should be done, when the right time is. Unfortunately, I think she has worsened a lot lately."
Just two days later, King Harald also addressed the media regarding Mette-Marit’s health status. His comments were laden with concern, especially given the backdrop of recent scandals involving her ties to the convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and her son Marius Borg, who is facing serious legal troubles, including multiple charges of rape. "We have heard the doctors say that this was going to happen, but we thought and hoped it would happen later, not now. But now, suddenly it is very relevant," he lamented during a visit to Askvoll. The King’s remarks came as public concern for Crown Princess Mette-Marit grew; her condition had become increasingly visible, as she has had to rely on oxygen at recent public events. "She is severely ill, and unfortunately, there is no doubt about it," added King Harald.
Reflecting on the issues surrounding Epstein, King Harald defended Mette-Marit, emphasizing that she has not engaged in any illegal activities. "We must remember that the Crown Princess has done nothing illegal. And she broke that connection [with Epstein]. Unlike others in Norway, she broke it very early. So I think we should acknowledge that merit," he stated in response to media inquiries.
In another health-related update, King Harald provided reassuring news regarding his wife, Queen Sonia, who was hospitalized due to heart problems. He confirmed that she has now been discharged and expressed her sadness for not being able to accompany him during his tour. "The queen wanted to be here with us and asked me to send you her regards. Her physical condition has improved a lot," noted the monarch, adding that her medications are now well-managed, allowing her to recover at home.
As the Norwegian royal family navigates these personal health challenges, their unity and support for one another are imperatively highlighted in the face of public scrutiny and personal trials.
