Novak Djokovic Withdraws from ATP Finals Due to Injury
On Tuesday morning, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic took to his social media platforms to announce his withdrawal from the upcoming ATP Finals, a prestigious tournament featuring the top eight players of the season, set to take place in Turin next week. Djokovic cited an injury as the reason for his decision, which prevents him from defending the title he clinched last year by defeating Italian Jannik Sinner in the final.
The ATP Finals has been a significant event in Djokovic's illustrious career, with the Serbian maestro having claimed the title an impressive seven times. His victories span from his first win in 2008 to his latest triumphs in 2022 and 2023. Djokovic's absence from this year's tournament marks a notable shift in the competitive landscape, as he will not be in contention to add to his accolades.
The tournament will kick off on Sunday, November 10, and conclude the following Sunday. Following Djokovic's announcement, a reshuffling of the participants has occurred. Players like Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Taylor Fritz have already secured their spots in the finals. Additionally, with Djokovic's exit, Casper Ruud, Alex De Minaur, and Andrej Rublev will now fill the remaining slots, previously contested for by these players.
Grigor Dimitrov, who is currently the first reserve for the tournament, remains on standby should any further withdrawals occur before the event.
In parallel, the WTA Finals, which is the women's equivalent of the ATP Finals, are taking place in Saudi Arabia. Italian player Jasmine Paolini is participating in both singles and doubles, partnering with Sara Errani. As the spotlight shifts between these two significant tournaments, tennis fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the upcoming matches, albeit with the absence of one of its biggest stars.
