Odesa Under Siege: The Consequences of Drone Strikes on Ukraine's Vital Port City
In the midst of freezing temperatures, residents of Odesa gather outside the Kadorr apartment complex, where a recent Russian drone strike has left walls blown out and vehicles crushed. For many, like 35-year-old Anastasia, the attack is a harsh reminder of the ongoing conflict that has forced them to move. Displaced from Donetsk after the Russian invasion, Anastasia describes the harrowing moment she awoke to her building shaking. "I thought it was a dream at first," she recalls, having heard the ominous sound of a drone in the night sky, reinforcing her feeling of insecurity in a city that had seemed relatively calm for a time.
As Russia escalates its strikes on Odesa, targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, the city is caught in a precarious situation. The heat of conflict is intensifying with Ukrainian forces recently striking Russian oil shipments and naval bases, prompting Russia to retaliate with increased drone and missile attacks. The Ukrainian Navy’s spokesperson, Dmytro Pletenchuk, presented a bleak assessment: out of the 19 days in January, only two were without an attack, as Odesa has become a focus of Russian aggression.
With the temperature dropping and winter setting in, Russian targets have shifted towards Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing significant disruptions as Odesa faces continuous bombardment. The governor of the Odesa region, Oleh Kiper, explained the military dynamics of the Black Sea, emphasizing how it serves both as a natural barrier and a source of vulnerability due to its open access to long-range strikes. "After the worst attack on December 13," Kiper added, "60% of the region was left without electricity, heat, or water supply."
Lt. Col. Denys Nosicov, leading the territorial defense groups, highlighted the psychological toll these attacks have on the local population. The consistent bombardment aims to weaken morale, and the Kuvar people have become accustomed to expecting daily assaults, with social media campaigns further reinforcing the anxiety inflicted by these attacks. As the situation evolves, both military and civilian forces are preparing for a challenging future.
Ukrainian officials maintain that the Black Sea is not only vital to their defense but also plays an important role in the ongoing economic war. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear: Russia’s attempts to isolate Odesa are ways to strangle Ukraine’s economy, particularly crippling its ability to export agricultural products, which are crucial to the nation’s economic lifeline. With 90% of Ukraine's agricultural produce transported through the ports of Odesa, the city’s resiliency is tied to its capacity to protect these shipping routes amid the encroaching danger.
Analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko pointed out the indispensable connection between the Black Sea and Ukraine’s economy. The challenges posed by these strikes demand an approach that considers threats from land, sea, and air equally significant. "Preparing Odesa for a circular defense with anti-tank traps and mines remains paramount," said Lt. Col. Nosicov. Despite the overwhelming nature of the threats facing Odesa, he insists that the response will be met with unwavering seriousness.
At the Lyceum for Construction and Architecture, the destructive impacts of the conflict are tangible. Director Igor Chernenko oversees the damage after drones struck their facility. With over 320 students once attending the school, the joy of education has been replaced with a sense of survival, as staff navigate the aftermath of relentless attacks. Chernenko reflects on the loss of archives and crucial educational resources, noting, "They don’t want us to prepare workers who will rebuild Ukraine."
As the war persists, the city of Odesa stands resilient against the unrelenting storm of drone strikes and missile attacks. However, with every assault, civilians feel the weight of fear and uncertainty grow heavier. Odesa, once a vibrant and beautiful city by the sea, now resides in the shadows of warfare, called a pearl by the Russians but determined by its citizens to remain independent, despite the increasing hardships they endure.
