Olive Oil Tycoon Arrested in Connection with Disappearance of Senegalese Laborer
Agents from the Central Operating Unit UCO of the Civil Guard have arrested Ginés VL, an olive oil businessman, suspected in the forced disappearance of Ibrahima Diouf, a 31-year-old Senegalese laborer who has not been heard from since January 5, 2021. Sources from the Civil Guard have confirmed the arrest of the employer and mentioned that the possibility of conducting a series of searches is currently under consideration.
The employer had previously faced legal issues due to labor exploitation. The Central Operating Unit of the Civil Guard has been investigating the disappearance of Ibrahima Diouf for months and recently apprehended the businessman, who was convicted in 2016 by the Provincial Court to two and a half years in prison along with fines up to 11,400 euros for labor exploitation, electricity fraud, and a crime against the Administration of Justice.
Furthermore, the businessman was also accused of the disappearance of another seasonal worker, Tidiany Coulibaly, a 22-year-old Malian, in 2013, but he was acquitted of those charges due to a lack of evidence.
This latest arrest follows the apprehension of two other businessmen in Jaén for the illegal hiring of foreign workers, where they were alleged to have forced the workers to endure shifts lasting up to 16 hours without paying the promised wages.
The ongoing investigations raise significant concerns about the treatment of foreign laborers in the region, highlighting issues of labor exploitation that have not gone unnoticed by law enforcement.
