Oney Tapia's Historic Gold Medal Victory at the Paris Paralympics
Oney Tapia, the Italian athlete of Cuban origin, has made history by winning the gold medal in the discus throw at the Paris Paralympics in the F11 category, which features blind athletes. This remarkable achievement adds to Italy's growing success at the games, as the nation had previously celebrated a gold medal in the men's discus throw with Rigivan Ganeshamoorthy competing in the F52 category, and a silver medal won by Assunta Legnante in the F11 division.
At 48 years old, Tapia is participating in his third Paralympics and has consistently earned medals in each event, showcasing his incredible talent and perseverance. However, this marks his first gold medal. In Rio 2016, he secured a silver in the discus throw, followed by a bronze in both the discus throw and shot put at the Tokyo 2021 games.
Despite being a strong competitor, Tapia faced disappointment after finishing seventh in the shot put at the current Paralympics. He had high hopes for this event, but managed to exceed expectations in the discus throw, where he was not among the leading favorites for gold.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Tapia relocated to Italy in 2002 to join the Old Rags baseball team in Lodi. As he transitioned to rugby, he simultaneously worked as a gardener. Tragically, it was during this job that he lost his sight due to an accident, which ultimately led him to explore various Paralympic sports.
In addition to his athletic prowess, Tapia has also gained recognition in Italy for his 2017 appearance on the television program 'Ballando con le stelle' (Dancing with the Stars), where he partnered with dancer Veera Kinnunen and emerged victorious.
Oney Tapia's journey is a testament to resilience and determination, and his gold medal accomplishment at the Paris Paralympics will be an inspiration for many. As he continues to break boundaries and achieve extraordinary feats, Tapia remains a shining example of how sport can transcend challenges and foster hope.
