Oscars 2023: A Night of Surprises and Historic Ties
In a remarkable turn of events, the 2023 Oscars witnessed an unprecedented seventh tie in the Best Fiction Short Film category, as celebrated films 'The Russian Singers' and 'Two People Exchanging Saliva' shared the prestigious award. This rare occurrence has only been seen six times in Oscar history, the most recent being in 2012 when 'Skyfall' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' tied in the Sound Editing category. The first instance of such an event dates back to the Academy's fifth awards edition in 1931-1932, when the prize for Best Actor was shared.
During the ceremony, directors Sam A Davis and Jack Piatt of 'The Russian Singers' expressed their astonishment upon receiving the accolade, thanking the Academy for recognizing a film that celebrates the unifying power of music and art. "Perhaps we are all brave enough to keep singing," they remarked, emphasizing the thematic heart of their work.
On the other hand, Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata, creators of 'Two People Exchanging Saliva,' accepted the Oscar with gratitude, pointing out the film's distinctive nature as being strange, queer, and predominantly made by women. Musteata passionately thanked the Academy for its support, highlighting the importance of diverse voices in the film industry.
Presenter Conan O'Brien humorously acknowledged the dual win, noting the unexpected extension it would add to the shorts acceptance speeches, joking, "It's ironic that the shorts acceptance will take twice as long."
The night also had major nods to other films, particularly 'One Battle After Another' directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which triumphed with an impressive 13 nominations following its prior win at the Golden Globes. Anderson’s film was among the favorites, showcasing the filmmaker's continuing prowess in the industry.
Adding more excitement, the Spanish film 'Sirat' by Oliver Laxe received two nominations, while 'The Sinners' made history with an astounding 16 nominations—a new record that reflects the elevated standards and competitiveness of contemporary filmmaking.
As the celebrations continued, the joint victory in the short film category sparked discussions reminiscent of the recent 2025 Goya Awards, where for the first time an ex aequo prize for Best Film was awarded. At that ceremony, actress Belén Rueda had to calm the audience before revealing that both 'El 47' and 'The Infiltrator' were honored with the night’s highest accolades.
This year’s Oscars not only celebrated artistic achievements but also brought a sense of community and inclusivity to the forefront, showcasing a diverse array of stories that resonate with the audience on multiple levels. With a rich tapestry of nominees and deserving winners, the 2023 Oscars proved once again that the film industry has much to celebrate as it grapples with change and innovation in storytelling.
