Over 90 Arrested in London During Pro-Palestinian Protest as Ban on Palestine Action Remains Controversial
In a significant turn of events, the Metropolitan Police of London arrested 92 individuals during a peaceful protest supporting the pro-Palestinian organization Palestine Action on Saturday. The ages of those arrested ranged from 27 to 82 years, showcasing a diverse demographic involved in the demonstration held in Trafalgar Square, an iconic site for public gatherings in the British capital.
The protest, organized by the British association Defend Our Juries, attracted over 500 attendees who participated in what was described as a vigil. Demonstrators held signs advocating for Palestine Action, some reading 'I oppose genocide' and 'I support Palestine Action', demanding an end to the ban imposed on the organization.
The background of this prohibition is rooted in a ruling by the High Court of London, which deemed the British Government's ban on Palestine Action, initially issued in July 2025, as illegal and the designation of the group as a terrorist organization as disproportionate. However, following the judgement, the Home Office was given the opportunity to appeal, leaving the status of Palestine Action in limbo.
Despite the court ruling and an initial assurance from police that they wouldn't arrest individuals simply for expressing support for Palestine Action, the Met Police reversed their decision weeks later, stating that the organization's ban remained effective pending the outcome of any appeal. In a statement posted on social media, they reiterated that any expressions of support for Palestine Action are classified as a criminal offense.
Tim Crossland, co-founder of Defend Our Juries, criticized the policing tactics in a video shared by the organization. He described the arrests as a manifestation of an ideology he labeled as 'mad and deeply rooted,' combining elements of Zionism and corporate fascism, which he claims is supported by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
As the situation continues to develop, with calls for the ban on Palestine Action to be lifted, the events of this Saturday highlight the tensions surrounding Britain's stance on pro-Palestinian activism and the legal boundaries defining such actions.
