Pedro Sánchez Champions Regional Collaboration at Conference of Presidents

Pedro Sánchez, the head of the Spanish Executive, has praised the Autonomous Community System as a significant achievement of the Spanish Constitution. His remarks came during an institutional declaration alongside María José Saénz de Buruaga, the president of Cantabria, prior to the commencement of the Conference of Presidents in Santander. This summit aims to address pressing regional issues such as financing, housing, migration, and healthcare resources.

In his speech, Sánchez emphasized the importance of the Autonomous Community System and the Constitution, particularly as the anniversary of the latter approaches. He conveyed to regional leaders and King Felipe VI in a brief meeting that the establishment of the autonomous state was a testament to the understanding of citizens and their representatives in the Cortes. This understanding is crucial for the democratization of Spain, as well as the recognition of its territorial diversity.

"We must claim the success that the creation of the autonomous state represented," Sánchez stated. He underscored the notion that the consolidation of democracy is closely linked to recognizing the diverse territories within the nation. Furthermore, he highlighted how the principle of 'unity in diversity,' as outlined in Title VIII of the Constitution, has led to positive outcomes including solidarity, economic growth, and effective responses to challenges that were previously unimaginable.

The Prime Minister argued for the importance of holding such regional summits outside of Madrid. He pointed out that a photograph of King Felipe VI alongside government representatives and regional presidents taken during the conference showcases the country's territorial unity. He described it as "a very powerful image" that brings reassurance and stability to all citizens.

Sánchez also spoke about the concept of co-governance, viewing it as another success that should motivate all communities to keep pursuing collaborative efforts. He urged the regional administrations to continue down the path of concertation and cooperation to effectively address the needs of citizens.

Recalling the agenda for the conference, which includes key issues such as financing, healthcare, immigration, and housing, Sánchez expressed his commitment to approaching these matters with a constructive spirit. He emphasized that the ongoing collaboration in these conferences has traditionally led to fruitful outcomes, but he called for the discussions to culminate in tangible agreements.

As discussions unfold at the Conference of Presidents, the focus on cooperation among Spain's regional administrations will likely reflect the broader commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring representatives address the diverse needs of their constituents.
