Penélope Cruz Joins the Cast of 'La Bola Negra': A Film Inspired by García Lorca

Penélope Cruz is set to play a pivotal role in 'La Bola Negra', the latest film from acclaimed directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, collectively known as 'the Javis'. Announced at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the film also features talents such as Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, and Carlos González.

The narrative will explore the lives of three gay men across different time periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. A significant part of the film draws inspiration from an unfinished work of the same name left behind by the renowned poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, as clarified by Ambrossi. He emphasized that the film would uniquely intertwine the varying times with layers of storytelling, representing emotional truths and experiences.

Cruz’s character was specifically crafted for her, exuding the dedication the Javis have towards the project. Ambrossi expressed his excitement about having Cruz onboard, calling it an 'absolute dream' for the team. Calvo echoed this sentiment, praising Cruz as an 'immense actress' whose involvement will add depth and authenticity to the film.

Meanwhile, Lola Dueñas will also join the cast, reuniting with Ambrossi and Calvo after their successful collaborations in 'La Veneno' and 'La Mesías'. According to Calvo, Dueñas will take on a challenging role that she is well-equipped to handle.

The lead trio includes Guitarricadelafuente, who makes his acting debut in this role as a musician, alongside Bernardeau, known for his previous work in 'Querer', and González, touted as the 'greatest talent of his generation', having emerged from 'La Veneno'. The directors have expressed their enthusiasm for Guitarricadelafuente, whose initial readings of the script have left a strong impression.

Set to commence filming in August, 'La Bola Negra' aims for a spring 2026 release. The production will take place across various locations in Spain, along with some international shoots, though specific locations have yet to be disclosed.

The film is produced by Movistar Plus, in collaboration with the production company Le Pacte and international distributor Goodfellas.

In other news related to the Javis, their new series 'Mariliendre', set to premiere on April 27 on Atresplayer, showcases the unique experiences of working with Ambrossi and Calvo, highlighting their dynamic approach to storytelling in contemporary Spanish cinema.
