Political Violence Resurfaces in Colombia: The Assassination Attempt on Candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay
Colombia is once again grappling with the shadows of its turbulent past as the attempted assassination of right-wing presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay during a campaign event in Bogotá has brought political violence back into sharp focus. As Uribe Turbay, the grandson of a former liberal president and son of a journalist murdered in 1991, fights for his life after being shot in the head, the nation is reminded of its fraught history with political turmoil and assassination.
The shocking incident occurred in broad daylight while Uribe Turbay was addressing around 100 supporters. A 14-year-old gunman, armed with a 9 mm Glock, fired ten shots, an act that not only endangered the life of the politician but also reignited fears of political violence reminiscent of Colombia’s most violent days. The motives behind this attack remain unclear amid a highly polarized political environment.
Despite the swift capture of the adolescent shooter by police and security personnel, authorities are struggling to unravel the complex web of motivations and affiliations behind the attack. Political scientist Francisco Gutiérrez Sanín emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the incident, pointing out that Colombia's history of violence is characterized by numerous intersecting factors that often cloud the identification of those orchestrating such acts.
The surge in violence coinciding with the peace agreement signed with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2016 had initially seen a reduction in murder and kidnapping rates. However, recent trends indicate a resurgence of violence linked to various factions, including extremist groups that have emerged after the demobilization of previous guerrilla fighters. The ongoing struggle for control over lucrative drug trafficking routes and territory exacerbates this situation. For instance, alarming statistics indicate that 71 social leaders were killed within just the first five months of this year.
The Colombian government’s response has been met with criticism. Jerónimo Castillo, a criminology expert, condemned the speculation surrounding the assassination attempt, calling it irresponsible to jump to conclusions based on hastily gathered cell phone footage. Castillo warns against oversimplifying the incident amid an atmosphere thick with confusion and uncertainty.
The government has proposed various theories, ranging from accusations of a transnational plot to undermine the conservative politician to theories claiming an intent to destabilize the current leftist administration. However, the identities of those masterminding these violent acts remain elusive, with investigators suggesting that hired gunmen often operate as fronts for more complicated criminal organizations.
María Victoria Llorente, director of the Ideas for Peace Foundation, argued that the assassination attempt represents a significant pivot in the lead-up to the 2026 presidential election, reflecting a sort of tragic disillusionment within Colombians. Unlike past incidents where attackers were sometimes identifiable, she asserts that today's political climate is characterized by a troubling lack of clarity concerning the factions involved.
Political analyst Hernando Gómez Buendía weighed in on the current political atmosphere, admonishing President Gustavo Petro for suggestively linking the attack to his government's performance without substantial evidence. This incident has exposed deep rifts within Colombian politics, as evidenced by nine opposition parties declining a government invitation to discuss electoral safety measures for the upcoming election.
Despite his recent positioning in polls, which forecasted a lackluster response to his candidacy, Uribe Turbay carries a political lineage steeped in Colombia’s complex history. His grandfather, Julio César Turbay Ayala, once occupied the presidency during turbulent times and implemented controversial security measures against leftist movements.
As Colombia stands on the brink of another election cycle, marked by fear and uncertainty, the attempted assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay serves as a stark reminder of the persistent specter of violence that shadows the country's political landscape and poses serious questions about its future.
