Pontevedra Court Sentences Man for Attempted Murder of Journalist

The Provincial Court of Pontevedra has handed down a five-year prison sentence to a young man previously convicted for assaulting former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in 2015. The recent ruling, issued on Monday, found him guilty of attempted murder following an alarming incident in July 2023, where he attacked a journalist from La Voz de Galicia.

The court's decision is not final, as the defendant has the right to appeal to the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia. The judges considered several factors in their ruling, including the attempted murder charge, resistance to law enforcement, and damage caused during the incident. A significant aspect of the sentence was the acknowledgment of the defendant's mental health issues, which led to his placement in a psychiatric facility for two to five years instead of a conventional prison term.

In addition to the prison sentence, the accused must pay a fine of €1,620 to the victim and is prohibited from approaching La Voz de Galicia's offices for a span of five years.

The harrowing events that transpired on July 14, 2023, took place at the editorial office of La Voz de Galicia on Rosalía de Castro street. According to evidence presented during the trial, the 25-year-old entered the building agitated, confronting a staff member over claims he made regarding his life being in jeopardy due to fabricated information in the newspaper.

The assailant brandished a wooden rolling pin hidden beneath his clothes and began smashing office equipment, creating chaos in the workspace. As the noise escalated, a journalist approached the scene only to be threatened with the words, "I'm going to kill you." The attacker raised the rolling pin, striking at the victim's head, who managed to defend himself with his arm.

In a moment of acute danger, the defendant retrieved a kitchen knife from his clothing and launched a fierce assault, aiming for the journalist's body. The victim sustained injuries to his chest, arm, and hands as he attempted to fend off the repeated stabs. Fortunately, he was able to escape the dire situation, running to safety just as law enforcement arrived.

Upon police arrival, the assailant resisted arrest, engaging in a physical struggle that resulted in injuries to one officer. Ultimately, the police were able to subdue him with necessary force, despite the chaos and resistance he put up.

The court deemed that the defendant had intent to kill, reasoning that even though the injuries inflicted were superficial, the tools used, the repeated nature of the attack, and the areas targeted indicated a clear intent to cause lethal harm. However, the judges opted for a lighter penalty due to the defendant's psychological diagnoses, which were found to considerably impair his decision-making capabilities.

This case marks a troubling pattern for the perpetrator, who has a history of violence, including a conviction in 2015 for assaulting Rajoy while attempting to take a photo during an election campaign, resulting in a two-year juvenile detention. He had later faced arrests for assaulting politicians and customers in public places. The recent sentencing reiterates the challenges faced by law enforcement and societal efforts to address mental health issues in the context of violent behavior.
