Pope Francis Admitted to Hospital for Bronchitis Treatment

Pope Francis, at 88 years old, is set to be admitted to a hospital in Rome for treatment and diagnostic tests related to ongoing bronchitis symptoms, according to an official statement from the Vatican. After his morning audiences on Friday, the Pope will check into the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic to receive necessary medical care following several days of experiencing bronchitis symptoms.

The Vatican noted that the Pope has recently delegated officials to read his prepared speeches during various events, a clear indication of his struggles with the illness. During a recent speech, he requested a priest's assistance, stating, 'Let me ask the priest to continue to read because I cannot yet with my bronchitis. I hope that next time I can.' Meanwhile, aides have read on his behalf during Mass on Sunday and at last Wednesday's general audience, as he attempted to manage his health.

Last week, the Pope held a series of meetings at the Vatican to focus on resting and recovery amidst his current health challenges. This is not the first time he has faced bronchitis; he was treated for the same condition at the Gemelli hospital in March 2023, during which he spent three nights there. Additionally, in December, the Pope had to cancel his planned trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit due to another illness.

Having served as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years, Pope Francis has had a number of health issues throughout his life, notably undergoing surgery to remove part of one of his lungs at the age of 21. As he faces another health challenge, the global community watches with concern and hopes for his swift recovery.
