Pope Francis' Health Update: A Promising Night After Breathing Crisis
Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for two weeks due to pneumonia in both lungs, spent a peaceful night following a recent breathing crisis, as reported by the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff experienced an isolated breathing episode that led to vomiting and a sudden deterioration in his respiratory condition. However, Vatican officials have stated that this crisis was brief and that doctors would need 24 to 48 hours to evaluate its impact on his overall health.
The incident occurred at Gemelli Hospital in Rome after three days of slight improvements in the Pope's health, which previously led to a reassessment of his situation, moving it out of critical status. Following the recent breathing challenge, the Pope is reported to be resting well, as reiterated by a Vatican statement.
Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14 due to bronchitis, which subsequently progressed into double pneumonia. His medical history includes a predisposition to lung infections from pleurisy developed in his youth and the removal of part of one lung during his training to become a priest in Argentina.
Medical experts note that given Pope Francis' age and chronic respiratory issues, a full recovery may require considerable time. Furthermore, he had been hospitalized previously in March 2023 for pneumonia and underwent a colon operation in June 2021. His advancing age has necessitated the use of a wheelchair and walking stick due to sciatic nerve pain and knee problems.
Despite his health setbacks, the Pope has maintained a rigorous schedule, particularly around events tied to the upcoming Catholic jubilee year. He has continued to manage his responsibilities from a special suite located on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, engaging in work, breathing exercises, and prayer during his recovery.
