Pope Francis Hospitalized Again Due to Ongoing Health Issues

Pope Francis was admitted to a hospital in Rome on Friday, February 14, for tests and ongoing treatment for bronchitis, the Vatican reported. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been experiencing noticeable breathlessness in recent days, delegated officials to read his speeches aloud during his public appearances. The Vatican stated that he was hospitalized at Rome's Gemelli Hospital for urgent diagnostic tests and to continue necessary treatment for his persistent bronchitis.

The Pope, who underwent surgery to remove part of one of his lungs during his youth, has been grappling with breathing difficulties for more than a week. This condition led him to request aides to read his speeches on multiple occasions. His previous hospitalization for bronchitis occurred in March 2023, where he spent three nights in the hospital and was treated successfully with antibiotics. More recently, he had to cancel a planned visit to Dubai in December 2023 to attend the United Nations COP28 climate change conference due to another instance of bronchitis.

Over the past few years, Pope Francis has faced various health challenges, including serious knee and hip pain, as well as issues related to an inflamed colon. Additionally, he underwent surgical procedures for a hernia, further impacting his mobility and overall stamina. Despite these recurring health concerns, the pontiff remains committed to his duties, although his physical limitations have forced him to adapt how he engages with the public and carries out his responsibilities.
