Pope Leo XIV Addresses Spanish Parliament: A Call for Global Unity Amid Crisis
Pope Leo XIV delivered a significant address to the Spanish parliament in Madrid, emphasizing the urgent need for the world to confront what he described as a profound spiritual and cultural crisis. In his speech, the pontiff highlighted a spectrum of pressing global issues, including migration, conflict, artificial intelligence, the climate emergency, and ethical dilemmas surrounding abortion and euthanasia.
The pope stated, "The world is undergoing a deep spiritual and cultural crisis which manifests itself in multiple forms of violence, polarization, and mutual mistrust." He asserted that, in this context, peace is not merely a political goal but a critical moral necessity.
Pope Leo urged lawmakers to pursue peace with diplomatic courage, ethical responsibility, and a commitment to resolving conflicts through international law, rather than by relying on the temporary quiet that armaments can enforce. He expressed concern that the growing trend of rearmament in various parts of the world, including Europe, poses a threat to global stability. "True security, on the other hand, stems from justice, patient dialogue, respect for international law, and prioritizing people's lives over the interests that profit from war," he noted.
A significant portion of his address focused on migration, a key issue during his weeklong visit to Spain. The pope plans to meet with individuals who have perilously crossed the Atlantic from Africa to Europe. As the first pope from the United States, Leo has previously clashed with the Trump administration over its foreign policy and treatment of migrants. His visit to Spain coincides with the socialist-led government's decision to regularize the status of over 500,000 undocumented migrants and asylum seekers, a stance contrary to the rising far-right sentiments in Europe.
Santiago Abascal, the leader of Spain's far-right Vox party, criticized the government's regularization plan, framing it as an 'immigrant invasion.' The Vox party is advocating for policies that prioritize Spaniards over foreign-born individuals in housing and benefits in regions where they govern alongside the conservative People's Party.
In his address, Pope Leo reiterated the moral obligation of nations to accept and protect migrants. He described migration as "the tragic drama of migration... challenges the conscience of nations and the ethical foundation of the international order." He argued for the establishment of safe and legal pathways for migrants, as well as initiatives to address the root causes of migration, insisting that no one should have to flee their home due to a lack of security, peace, or adequate living conditions, driven by economic inequalities or the climate crisis.
The pope's impassioned plea prompted a seven-minute ovation from the audience. He also reminded legislators of the church's teachings regarding the value of all human life, stating, "All human life must be recognized and protected from conception to natural death in every circumstance of its existence." He emphasized that when the recognition of human life is diminished, the most vulnerable populations are most at risk, and the very purpose of law—to serve and protect every individual—loses its significance.
Abortion, which was legalized in Spain in 1985 and further relaxed in 2010, and recent euthanasia legislation introduced in 2021, remain contentious issues in the country.
Later during his visit, Pope Leo is scheduled to meet with survivors of sexual abuse inflicted by members of the clergy. Ahead of this meeting, he labeled the abuse as a 'scourge' and called on the Church to respond with truth, justice, and reparation. However, groups representing abuse victims have expressed frustration over their exclusion from direct dialogues with the pope, demanding instead rights and reparations for all victims. A coalition of these groups issued a statement saying, "We don't want a photo with the pope; we want rights and reparations for all the victims. Excluding survivors and groups that have worked for years for truth, justice, and reparation only deepens feelings of abandonment and weariness amidst prolonged negligence."
As he navigates these complex issues, Pope Leo XIV's message resonates with a call for compassion, justice, and a deeper commitment to humanity amid crises that impact millions across the globe.
