Popular Party Organizes Protest Against Government Amid Corruption Allegations

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain's Popular Party (PP), announced a protest scheduled for June 8 in Madrid, advocating for citizen involvement in the political process. "The future of the nation belongs to all Spaniards; it is they who have a say. If they cannot do so at the polls because Sánchez continues to refuse to call elections, they can do so in the streets," Feijóo stated during an institutional address.

The announcement follows growing allegations against the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), with Feijóo specifically accusing them of corruption and mafia-like practices. "No matter where you look, Sánchez is surrounded by corruption," he emphasized, suggesting that the integrity of the entire country is at stake.

During his speech, Feijóo refrained from entertaining questions, yet he addressed concerns regarding a supposed operation by the PSOE to acquire compromising information from the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard. This unit is known for investigating various affairs, including those linked to First Lady Begoña Gómez and other key figures.

While many anticipated the announcement of a motion of no confidence against the government, Feijóo clarified that his intention to submit one remains strong but is contingent upon the actions of Pedro Sánchez’s coalition partners. "The decay of this Government and the connivance of its partners only reflect on them," he remarked, calling for accountability from Sánchez's collaborators.

Feijóo's insistence on the protest highlights an escalating political crisis in Spain, where he noted, "Politically the situation is unsustainable. We must say enough... This is all about one thing: decay or cleanliness, lies or integrity, sewers or decency, democracy or mafia."

His comments came after reports from El Confidencial unveiled troubling allegations against the PSOE, setting the stage for what could be a significant political struggle as Spain looks towards its citizens for guidance and public expression of discontent. Feijóo's rallying cry underscores the mounting frustration among opposition leaders as they pursue both accountability and integrity in governance.
