Populists Celebrate Victory in Serbia Municipal Elections Despite Allegations of Irregularities

Serbia's ruling populists from the Serbian Progressive Party declared victory in the tense municipal elections held throughout the country, including a rerun vote in the capital Belgrade on Sunday, June 2nd. The Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, confidently stated that the party had swept the election claiming a pure and convincing victory, a result likely to be confirmed by the state electoral commission. However, opposition parties raised concerns over major irregularities, such as organized voting, vote-buying, and violations of vote secrecy. Incidents and skirmishes were reported in Belgrade and Novi Sad, with election observers raising criminal complaints.

The opposition groups accused the governing party of using unlawful call centers to influence voters, while the Serbian Progressive Party denied these allegations and accused the opposition of attacking their activists. The election in Belgrade was a rerun following reports of irregularities in December, which had triggered political tensions. Despite the opposition claiming victory in some areas, the ruling party maintained a strong hold on power throughout the country.

President Aleksandar Vucic's party, in power for over a decade, has faced criticism for alleged crime links, corruption, and crackdowns on democracy. Vucic, while formally seeking EU membership, has been criticized for drifting away from pro-EU values. The populists have positioned themselves as the only force capable of maintaining stability in a time of global turmoil. The opposition split over participating in the election or demanding fair elections further weakened their chances of success.

The result of the elections, with allegations of irregularities and a divided opposition, raises concerns about the state of democracy and the future of Serbia's political landscape. The close ties with Russia and China, along with accusations of corruption, have led to a growing divide in the country. As Serbia seeks EU membership, the challenges of balancing international alliances and democratic values remain at the forefront of the political debate.
