Power Supply Fault Causes Major Disruptions in Rome Railway Traffic
Train traffic has faced significant delays at the Rome railway junction after services were suspended early Wednesday due to a fault in the power supply line affecting Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina stations. Technicians are currently investigating the cause of the fault, which has led to extensive repercussions for rail services throughout Italy, particularly along the main route connecting Milan and Naples, as well as routes from Turin.
As a result of the power line disconnection, over 100 trains have been cancelled, either completely or partially, while more than 40 high-speed and Intercity trains experienced delays exceeding one hour by midday Wednesday. The situation has left commuters stranded and frustrated, highlighting the vulnerabilities within the railway infrastructure.
Gianpiero Strisciuglio, the CEO of Italian rail operator Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), stated that the rare fault affected the electrical cabin responsible for powering the Rome railway junction. Although the cause is still under investigation, authorities have ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack, which has become a concern in recent years for transport networks worldwide.
As technicians work to resolve the issue, travelers are advised to check the latest updates on train services and to remain patient as the disruptions continue to affect the railway system. The incident underscores the importance of robust infrastructure and efficient crisis management protocols in mitigating the impact of unforeseen technical failures.
