Prime Minister Meloni Reflects on Justice Referendum Outcome, Vows to Continue Reforms
On Monday afternoon, following the clear victory of the 'No' vote in the recent justice referendum, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the nation through a brief video statement. In her remarks, Meloni expressed her disappointment over the electoral outcome but firmly ruled out the possibility of her resignation, despite having previously indicated that such a result could lead to significant political consequences.
The Prime Minister stated, "Sovereignty belongs to the people, and the Italians have expressed themselves clearly today. The government has fulfilled its promise to advance a justice reform that was part of our electoral program. The citizens have decided, and we respect their decision, as we always have."
Meloni acknowledged the missed opportunity to modernize Italy's judicial system but reassured the public of her commitment to proceed with seriousness and determination in serving the nation. "This does not change our dedication to working for the good of the country and honoring the mandate that has been entrusted to us. We will move forward as we have always done—with responsibility, determination, and above all, with respect towards Italy and its people," she asserted.
The referendum held considerable significance for Meloni's government, as it represented the only major reform effort the administration could realistically hope to enact before the political elections slated for 2027. Other significant reforms, such as differentiated autonomy and the so-called premiership, have faced substantial hurdles—namely, the former was nullified by the Constitutional Court while the latter remains bogged down in parliamentary debate.
In the lead-up to the referendum, Meloni had urged voters to concentrate solely on the merits of the proposed judicial reform, emphasizing that the referendum should not be politicized. She had assigned her ministers and party majority with the task of advocating for the reform, but the campaign suffered setbacks due to several missteps, including controversial remarks from Justice Minister Carlo Nordio and a lack of active support from her political allies. As the referendum date approached, Meloni began to take a more proactive public stance, encouraging direct engagement with the electorate.
In light of the referendum's outcome, it remains to be seen how Meloni's administration will navigate the complexities of its legislative agenda moving forward, particularly in light of the stalled reforms that could reshape Italy’s governance landscape.
