Princess Leonor to Pursue Political Science at Universidad Carlos III
The Royal House has officially announced the academic plans for Princess Leonor, who is set to begin her studies in Political Science at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. The young princess will commence her studies in the third semester of the year 2026, embarking on a four-year degree program that comprises 240 credits, with courses taking place at the Getafe campus.
Princess Leonor has successfully navigated the selection process tailored for students completing their high school studies abroad. The Royal House confirmed this positive outcome through a statement issued earlier today, ensuring that throughout her academic journey, the princess will continue to fulfill her official duties.
It is notable that her father, King Felipe VI, also pursued higher education, graduating in Law from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, highlighting a tradition within the Spanish monarchy of opting for public universities.
At Universidad Carlos III, Princess Leonor will be taught by a diverse roster of esteemed faculty members primarily from the Social Sciences department, along with contributions from the Humanities Department and the Department of International Law, Ecclesiastical Law, and Philosophy of Law. Some prominent professors who will shape Princess Leonor's academic experience include:
- Pablo Simón, a noted political scientist and analyst.
- Ángel Garrido, former counselor of the Community of Madrid and regional president from May 2018 to April 2019.
- Jorge Lago, one of the founding members of the political party Podemos.
- Ignacio Sánchez-Cuenca, a columnist for El País.
- Pablo Gómez Perpinyá, a former deputy of the regional assembly for Más Madrid until January 2026.
Her degree in Political Science will encompass a range of subjects, including Political Science, Humanities, Law, Economics, Sociology, History, and International Relations. This comprehensive curriculum reflects the university's commitment to providing a robust education that prepares students for democratic engagement and leadership roles.
Founded in 1989 by former Congress president Gregorio Peces-Barba, who is considered one of the seven fathers of the Spanish Constitution, Universidad Carlos III has established itself as a notable institution for higher learning in Spain, particularly in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.
