Protests Erupt Across Slovakia Against PM Fico's Russia Alignment
Large crowds took to the streets in cities across Slovakia, expressing deep concerns over Prime Minister Robert Fico's perceived shift of the country towards Russia and demanding his resignation. Tens of thousands gathered at Bratislava's Freedom Square for the second time in just two weeks, holding up cellphone flashes and chanting slogans such as 'Resign, resign,' and 'Russian agent.' Organizers reported that demonstrations took place in 41 locations within Slovakia—an increase from 28 just two weeks prior—as well as in 13 cities abroad. News website Dennik estimated that up to 45,000 people attended the rally in Freedom Square alone.
These demonstrations mark the largest public outcry since 2018, when the murder of an investigative journalist and his fiancée led to widespread political upheaval and the subsequent fall of Fico's previous government. Following his return to power in 2023 for his fourth term, Fico has raised alarms among critics, who accuse him of undermining democracy and steering Slovakia closer to Russia. His controversial actions include halting military aid to Ukraine, opposing Ukraine's future NATO membership, and criticizing EU sanctions against Russia. Fico met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last December, further intensifying concerns about his alignment with Moscow amidst its ongoing war against Ukraine.
Adding to the tension, Fico has claimed that certain opposition groups are attempting to turn the protests into efforts to overthrow his government. The developments have led to heightened scrutiny of Fico's leadership and the direction in which he is taking Slovakia. With an atmosphere reminiscent of past political crises, observers are watching closely as the country finds itself at a critical crossroads in its relationship with both the EU and Russia.
