PSdeG Leader Acknowledges Awareness of Harassment Allegations Against Former Lugo President
José Ramón Gómez Besteiro, the Secretary General of the PSdeG, confirmed on Friday that he was informed about the sexual harassment allegations against José Tomé, the former president of the Lugo Provincial Council, as early as October. This revelation came during a press conference, where Besteiro explained that he sought clarifications from Tomé upon learning about the accusations. However, Tomé denied any wrongdoing at that time.
Besteiro disclosed that the information regarding the alleged harassment surfaced through a third party who mentioned the existence of a potential victim. Notably, this victim did not file a formal complaint until just this week, prompting a swift response from the party.
Defending the PSdeG’s actions, Besteiro emphasized that the party chose not to ignore the allegations. He pointed out that Tomé was asked to resign from all his positions—both in terms of institutional responsibilities and organizational roles—on the same day the complaint was made public.
Following the allegations, Tomé has placed himself on precautionary leave from the PSOE membership. As of Friday, he officially resigned from his role as president of the Provincial Council. However, he has not relinquished his mandate completely, which is in direct conflict with the directives of the PSdeG and the demands of his government partners in the institution, the BNG.
This situation continues to develop as the party navigates the implications of the accusations and seeks to uphold its stance on accountability and responsiveness to claims of harassment.
