PSOE Acknowledges Failures in Handling Sexual Harassment Complaints Against Francisco Salazar

On Friday, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) released a note to its federal executive members and regional federations, admitting to shortcomings in their management of sexual harassment complaints involving Francisco Salazar. The party expressed regret over not providing adequate support to the individuals who came forward with allegations. In their communication, they stated, "It hurts us that this has happened." In July, the PSOE received two anonymous complaints, which were promptly forwarded to the Harassment Board for analysis and verification. However, during their reflection, the party acknowledged that their communication with the anonymous complainants did not meet the necessary standards and required significant improvement. The PSOE noted that the details of the complaints, which were subsequently reported by media outlets such as eldiarioes, described despicable and intolerable behaviors that are incompatible with the party's core values. The PSOE reiterated its commitment to enhancing their fight against harassment targeting women and to advancing equality policies, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards such acts. They highlight their status as the first political party in Spain to establish a protocol addressing sexual harassment, affirming, "We are aware that being an innovative system requires continuous improvements. Therefore, the PSOE will not spare any resources until this system is optimal." In regards to the complaints against Salazar, the party assured that the Harassment Board is presently analyzing and verifying the allegations as per the established protocols. Their findings will be compiled in a conclusions report that will propose necessary measures to the organization. This information is set to be communicated to relevant parties and the Organizations Secretariat. Moreover, the PSOE has urged other political parties to develop their own harassment prevention protocols. The party firmly stated, "We will not allow the commitment of the Socialist Party to eradicating violence against women in all its forms to be questioned, especially by those who trivialize, deny, or fail to combat violence against women." The statement underscores the party's dedication to addressing such critical issues earnestly and effectively. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
