Public Health Alert in Muskiz: Benzene Levels Rise Following Refinery Incident
The Basque Government's Public Health Department has issued a significant health advisory for the residents of Muskiz, a town in Bizkaia with a population of approximately 7,465, following alarming findings of benzene in the atmosphere. This precautionary measure comes after an incident at the nearby Petronor refinery where a gasoline tank malfunction has reportedly led to high concentrations of benzene being detected in the air.
Residents are urged to remain indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to minimize exposure to the elevated benzene levels that have been found in ambient air, ranging from 100 to 200 micrograms per cubic meter in populated areas. These levels are significantly above normal and pose health risks, necessitating immediate awareness and action from the community.
Preventive recommendations include avoiding outdoor activities, especially strenuous exercise, and reducing the ventilation of indoor spaces. If air conditioning systems are available, they should be set to recirculate air without drawing in outside air. Special caution is advised for vulnerable groups such as individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
Muskiz’s mayor, Eduardo Briones, has echoed these recommendations, suggesting that parents refrain from sending children to school and keep them indoors. In a communal effort, sports, educational, and social centers are being asked to halt outdoor activities during this critical period.
The source of the issue stems from a hazardous incident at the Petronor refinery, where certain gasoline components have vaporized and released benzene – a known volatile organic compound that can be harmful at elevated exposure levels. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with ongoing assessments being conducted to ensure public safety. Initial reports indicate that, while benzene levels were notably high, they are beginning to show a downward trend, attributed to various factors including weather conditions and the specific nature of benzene.
As part of the response, the Basque government’s departments responsible for Safety, Environment, and Health, along with Public Health officials, are keeping a vigilant watch on the evolving situation. Measures are being taken by Petronor to mitigate the incident effectively, underlining the importance of safety protocols in such emergencies.
Further updates are expected at nine in the morning, when new air quality samples will be taken to assess whether the advisory for residents will remain in effect. The health authorities have committed to keeping the public informed until benzene levels return to normal and the risk is adequately diminished.
