Putin Escalates Tensions: Russia Tests Hypersonic Missile Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict
In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia launched a hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile, named Oreshnik, at a Ukrainian military site in Dnipro. In a hastily organized televised address to the nation, Putin warned Western countries that Moscow is within its rights to retaliate against states providing long-range weapons to Ukraine.
The missile attack, which occurred Thursday morning, was purportedly in response to recent strikes by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory using missiles supplied by the United States and Britain. Putin asserted that the deployment of the new ballistic missile was justified, claiming it was a necessary measure in light of NATO’s aggressive posturing towards Russia.
According to accounts from the Ukrainian side, prior to Putin's announcement, Russian forces had also fired what was initially reported as an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Dnipro. Sources indicated that a total of nine projectiles targeted critical infrastructure and industrial facilities across the city. Putin stated, "We consider ourselves justified in using our weapons against military targets in those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities.
