Raffaele Fitto Appointed Executive Vice President of the European Commission

In a significant reshuffle within the European Commission, President Ursula von der Leyen announced the appointment of six executive vice presidents, including Italy's Raffaele Fitto. Fitto, who serves as Italy's European Affairs Minister, has been chosen to oversee cohesion and reforms as part of the new EU executive team.

During a press conference, von der Leyen explained that the appointed vice presidents will play crucial roles in shaping EU policy. Alongside Fitto, the six top positions will be filled by notable figures including Spain's Teresa Ribera, Finland's Henna Virkkunen, France's Stéphane Séjourné, Estonia's Kaja Kallas, and Romania's Roxana Minzatu.

Fitto will focus on policies concerning cohesion, regional development, and urban growth, bringing his extensive experience to enhance investments and support for EU-funded projects. The significance of Italy's representation was emphasized by von der Leyen, who acknowledged the country's crucial role within the bloc.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni celebrated Fitto's appointment, expressing that it marks a prestigious recognition of Italy's renewed influence in the EU. On social media, she noted, "Italy finally returns to be a protagonist in Europe," reaffirming her confidence in Fitto's capability to serve both European and Italian interests effectively.

Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also commended the appointment, describing it as excellent news that underscores Italy's credibility and significance in European affairs. He lauded it as a success for the government, reinforcing the notion that Italy continues to hold a central position in the EU's political landscape.

Fitto's role comes at a pivotal time as the EU seeks to address recovery efforts post-COVID-19, aiming to ensure sustainable growth and cohesion among member states. His responsibilities in implementing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) will be critical as Europe navigates the ramifications of the pandemic and strives for future resilience.

As Italy steps back into a prominent role in the EU, Fitto’s appointment may shape not only national political dynamics but also influence the future of European collaboration and development.
