Rat Poison Found in HiPP Baby Food, Major Recall Issued Across Austria
In a troubling discovery, Austrian authorities have found rat poison in a jar of HiPP baby food, prompting a significant recall from over 1,000 Spar supermarkets nationwide. The police in Burgenland revealed that a sample from a 190g (7oz) jar of carrots and potatoes baby food had tested positive for harmful substances after a concerned customer reported the issue.
HiPP issued a statement on Saturday, cautioning that it could not be ruled out that a dangerous substance had been introduced into the product, implying possible tampering with the jars. The company underscored the potentially life-threatening nature of consuming the affected contents.
According to the police statement, consumers should be vigilant for jars featuring a sticker with a red circle on the bottom, as well as lids that are opened, damaged, missing a safety seal, or displaying an unusual smell. Initial lab tests conducted on similar jars confiscated by authorities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia also indicated the presence of a toxic substance, though no further details were provided.
Authorities in Austria were alerted to this risk following investigations in Germany, adding an international dimension to the recall. HiPP described the situation as critical, attributing it to "external criminal interference" that has affected the distribution channel through Spar Austria.
A spokesperson for Spar acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, confirming that the recall was a precautionary measure. In total, the product recall impacts around 1,500 stores in Austria, with assurances that there is no risk posed to other outlets in different countries.
As a safety measure, both Spar and HiPP have strongly advised customers against consuming any jars purchased from Spar Austria that may fall under the recall. They have also committed to providing full refunds for returned products.
For added safety, the police have recommended that anyone who comes into contact with a questionable jar wash their hands thoroughly to avert any potential risks.
HiPP, known for its strict quality standards, has yet to provide further comment as investigations continue. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in food safety and the importance of prompt reporting by consumers.
