Regret in the Shadows: Kim Kardashian Robbery Suspect Reflects on a Life of Crime
A 71-year-old man, Yunice Abbas, who claimed to have played a minor role in the infamous 2016 jewelry heist where Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint, expressed deep remorse for his involvement in the crime. Abbas is one of ten defendants on trial in Paris for their participation in the robbery that occurred on October 23, 2016.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, Abbas recounted how he remained in a hotel lobby as two accomplices stormed into Kardashian's room, where they bound her and escaped with a staggering €10 million ($7.5 million) worth of her jewelry. Seeking to profit from his criminal past, Abbas published a tell-all book in 2021 titled "I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian." However, when confronted by a prosecutor who showcased the book in court, Abbas revealed his discomfort and regret, shaking his head vigorously as he proclaimed his remorse.
Describing the events of that night, Abbas indicated he arrived at the scene on a bicycle and fled in the same manner, inadvertently leaving behind a bag filled with stolen items. He did manage to retrieve the bag but overlooked a diamond necklace that became the only piece of stolen jewelry recovered by authorities.
The court session saw Abbas, who now battles Parkinson's disease, place his right hand over his chest to calm his racing heart as he discussed his past. He conveyed that participating in the Kardashian heist was a ‘job too many’ and that it opened his eyes to the repercussions of his criminal activities.
Abbas's criminal history, laid bare by the presiding judge, features past convictions for various offenses, including armed robbery and creating secret compartments in cars for smuggling cannabis. Reflecting on his life choices, Abbas admitted to moments of weakness driven by financial desperation, stating he turned to 'easy shortcuts' that ultimately complicated his life.
As of now, Abbas and the nine other defendants—most in their 60s and 70s and with notable criminal backgrounds—are not in custody. Kardashian, now 44 years old, is scheduled to testify in court on May 13. The defendants, often referred to by underworld nicknames like 'Old Omar' and 'Blue Eyes,' present an ironic contrast to the image of gentle senior citizens that some may envision.
However, not everyone is swayed by this portrayal. Henri de Beauregard, the lawyer representing the night receptionist who was coerced into guiding the robbers to Kardashian’s room, urged the public not to fall for the myth of friendly, Robin Hood-style pensioners. The trial continues to unveil the complexities and realities surrounding this notorious crime and its participants.
