Repello: The Revolutionary Sound-Based Rat Repellent

Researchers at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) have made a groundbreaking advancement in pest control with a new invention, Repello, that promises to send rats fleeing in panic. After years of dedicated research, this innovative rat repellent utilizes sound waves that target the rodents' reptilian brain, mimicking the distress signal associated with their teeth grinding, a cue generally indicating danger. Örjan Johansson, a professor of technical acoustics at LTU, explains that the device emits specific frequencies that resonate within the range rats are most sensitive to, amplifying the sound to a terrifying decibel for the rodents. This unique approach is designed to create an overwhelming auditory cue that compels rats to perceive an immediate threat, causing them to flee swiftly. What sets Repello apart from previous ultrasonic devices, which have been ineffectual as rodents often adapt to constant tones, is its use of complex sound sequences. Unlike simpler models that produce a steady ultrasound which rodents grow accustomed to, Repello generates a variety of tonal patterns that change in frequency and intensity. This approach is similar to military sound cannons, which leverage unpredictability to maintain efficacy, making it virtually impossible for the animals to get used to the signals. According to Johansson, the effectiveness lies not in volume but in the ability to simulate an acute threat, which the rats instinctively recognize as life-threatening. The product has even demonstrated its success in real-world tests; a field study conducted in Gothenburg showed that in one property, the number of observed rats plummeted from 44 to zero within days, with none returning to the area despite the continued availability of food and shelter. This innovative repellent has caught the attention of both national and international markets, with Swedish media outlets like SVT and TV4 highlighting its potential. For the first time, the advanced technology behind Repello is available for consumers, with each unit covering an area of up to 40 square meters. The interest surrounding this patented Swedish invention continues to grow as it presents a safer, more humane solution to the ongoing problem of rodent infestations.
