Rescue Efforts Underway as Yacht Sinks Off Sicilian Coast, Seven Missing

Seven people are missing after a 49-meter (160-foot) yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during severe weather, sparking urgent rescue operations. The vessel, which carried 22 individuals, including British citizens and other foreign nationals, encountered treacherous conditions early Monday morning around 5 AM, leading to its distress and subsequent sinking.

Fifteen people were successfully rescued by coastguard patrol boats and firefighters, among them a one-year-old child. According to reports from Italy's ANSA news agency, among the missing are four British individuals, a Canadian, and two Americans.

The incident unfolded when the yacht, named Bajesian, was moored in the port at Porticello before departing on Sunday evening. As rescuers fear for the missing individuals, efforts are being made by divers to reach the yacht's hull, which submerged to a depth of approximately 49 meters.

In a positive note, the infant boy who was rescued, along with his mother who suffered minor injuries, has been admitted to the hospital and is reported to be in good condition. Medical staff are conducting further examinations to ensure the child's well-being.

Local media, such as Il Giornale di Sicilia, revealed that the vessel was flying a British flag and predominantly carried passengers from the UK, alongside individuals hailing from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, and British-French citizens.

As the search and rescue operations continue, the families of those missing anxiously await updates from authorities in hopes of a positive outcome. This tragic incident highlights the dangers of sailing during inclement weather and underscores the importance of maritime safety.
