Rescue Operations Ongoing in Tuscany After Severe Flooding
Tuscany's Governor Eugenio Giani announced on Tuesday that search operations are actively being conducted to locate a missing woman and her five-month-old grandson in the Tuscan region between Livorno and Pisa. This area has recently experienced a devastating weather event, with up to 226 millimeters of rain falling in just six hours, far exceeding the typical rainfall for an entire month.
Currently, two individuals are unaccounted for, prompting ongoing rescue efforts coordinated by Tuscany's civil protection. Governor Giani explained that operations have continued overnight thanks to the extensive support of personnel involved in these rescue missions.
Initiated on Monday night, the rescue operations are focusing on areas such as Castagneto Carducci, San Vincenzo, Monteverdi Marittimo, and Montecatini Val di Cecina, all straddling the provinces of Livorno and Pisa. This unparalleled storm, according to Giani, is unlike any weather event previously recorded in this region since the start of meteorological observations.
The missing woman and her grandson were reported lost in Montecatini Val di Cecina after the Sferza stream overflowed due to the relentless rain that has plagued the area. In a fortunate turn of events, the child's parents and grandfather, who are German tourists, were rescued from the roof of their vacation home where they had sought refuge from the intensifying floodwaters.
As the community rallies together to support the ongoing rescue efforts, the focus remains on finding the missing individuals and ensuring safety for all residents in the impacted areas.
