Revitalizing Careers: The Success of Restart Jobs in Ronneby Municipality

In the heart of Ronneby municipality, a groundbreaking initiative known as 'restart jobs' has emerged as a compelling strategy to combat long-term unemployment, while simultaneously addressing the workforce needs of local businesses. This innovative approach allows the municipality to connect job seekers with employers requiring additional support, fostering a mutually beneficial environment that not only aids the unemployed but also enriches workplaces with new talent.

One inspiring example is the journey of Grace Alsaaty, who arrived in Sweden in 2014 armed with a university degree in mathematics and statistics from Syria. However, despite her educational background and language abilities, Alsaaty faced a daunting job market that dismissed her applications due to her lack of local experience and professional connections. Refusing to succumb to despair, she took proactive steps to enhance her employability, learning Swedish through YouTube and obtaining her driver’s license—all in an effort to improve her prospects.

After months of relentless job hunting, Grace turned to the labor market unit in Ronneby, which coordinates the restart jobs program. This moment marked a pivotal turning point in her professional journey. Just days following her outreach, Grace was offered a position as an additional resource for the teaching staff at Sfi, a program designed for newcomers to learn Swedish. Lisa Hjelm, who oversees Sfi, expressed her excitement about Grace's addition to the team, stating, 'I was pleasantly surprised to gain access to such a well-educated person. Though she had no teaching experience, we found ways to integrate her into the classroom effectively.'

It wasn't long before Grace's strengths revealed themselves; her background in mathematics made her an invaluable asset to math students at komvux, many of whom share Arabic as their first language. Hjelm noted, 'It’s amazing to see how a person can develop if the conditions are right.' Indeed, providing a nurturing work environment proved essential for Grace’s growth.

Lisa Hjelm had initially not planned to hire extra resources until the municipality suggested Grace through the restart jobs initiative. Now, she reflects positively on this decision, saying, 'We have gained an energetic, skilled, and competent colleague. Without the trial period, we would never have discovered her.' The kindness and dedication of workplaces to welcome individuals who have been long-term unemployed is critical; Hjelm invested considerable effort in mentorship and skill enhancement initiatives to support Grace in her new role.

After two years with the restart job program, Grace was offered a permanent position. To qualify for this advancement, she pursued a teaching license while simultaneously working. In March 2025, after her determination paid off, she proudly earned her license, officially becoming a high school mathematics teacher in adult education in Ronneby.

Reflecting on this journey, Hjelm stated, 'We are very satisfied to have gained a fantastic math teacher and how we have utilized restart jobs. It benefits both society and the individual when you dare to see the possibilities.'

Understanding Restart Jobs

The restart jobs initiative is designed to provide straightforward and effective support for employers seeking to hire individuals who have been unemployed for a minimum of 12 months or those new to Sweden. This program is especially aimed at individuals aged 20-24, who are entitled to a reduced unemployment status lasting six months after their arrival.

Key features of the restart jobs program include support covering up to 60 percent of the wage costs, with a maximum of 20,000 SEK per month, depending on the hired individual's profile. The compensation period extends up to one year for individuals aged 20-24, while those aged 25-66 can qualify for support lasting up to two years. The initiative applies to both full-time and part-time positions, spanning permanent and temporary roles.

In this way, Ronneby municipality's restart jobs program not only fortifies local businesses with fresh talent but also empowers job seekers like Grace Alsaaty, illustrating a successful integration model that can change lives and enhance communities.
