RFEF Sanctions Atlético de Madrid After Disturbing Match Incident
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has imposed sanctions on Atlético de Madrid following severe incidents during the recent clash against Real Madrid. The federation announced on Wednesday that the club will face a partial closure of its stadium for three matches along with a hefty fine of 45,000 euros.
These sanctions stem from incidents classified as very serious infractions under article 762 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which highlights the seriousness of throwing objects from the stands. The affected sections of the stadium include sections 127 to 133 in the South Lower Stand, designated as areas where the breaches occurred.
The application of the sanctions will proceed in accordance with article 571 of the same code. Atlético de Madrid has the option to appeal the decision within ten working days following the official notification of the sanctions.
The situation escalated rapidly, with debate surrounding the disciplinary measures underway since the early hours of Wednesday. This decision comes after Atlético de Madrid took swift action against the behavior of a radical fan group by permanently expelling the identified supporter involved in the object throwing. Furthermore, the club has introduced a new policy prohibiting entry into the stadium for individuals wearing face-covering garments, like the balaclava worn by the offending fan.
The object throwing incident directly impacted the match, causing a temporary suspension as players and officials retreated to the locker rooms in response. The match was eventually resumed after a break.
This incident has spurred broader discussions about fan safety and behavior in stadiums, raising concerns that may prompt further action from the RFEF and other football authorities to ensure a safer environment for players and supporters alike.
