Richard Gere to Receive Prestigious Goya International Award for Cinematic Excellence

American actor and producer Richard Gere is set to receive a significant honor in Spanish cinema—the Goya International Award—during a gala scheduled for February 8 in Granada. The Academy of Cinema recognizes Gere for his extraordinary contributions to film, highlighting his roles in some of the most iconic movies in cinematic history, as well as his profound commitment to social issues, both personally and professionally. Notably, this accolade coincides with the 50th anniversary of Gere's debut on the silver screen.

For decades, Gere has left an indelible mark on the film industry with performances in classic films like "Days of Heaven," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "American Gigolo," "The Cotton Club," "Pretty Woman," and the musical "Chicago," for which he won a Golden Globe. His cinematic legacy is entwined with celebrated directors such as Terrence Malick, Francis Ford Coppola, John Schlesinger, Robert Altman, Paul Schrader, and Richard Brooks. Additionally, he has shared the screen with acclaimed actresses, including Julia Roberts, Kim Basinger, Jodie Foster, Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, and Diane Keaton.

Beyond his film career, the Academy also acknowledges Gere's social activism. Over 30 years ago, he founded the Gere Foundation to support his intensive activism for Tibetan autonomy and the preservation of Tibetan culture, championed by the Dalai Lama. Having embraced Buddhism since his twenties, Gere has also been a strong advocate for indigenous rights, refugee assistance, and homelessness. His dedication crosses borders, collaborating with numerous NGOs, including Survival International, Open Arms, and Hogar Sí. Furthermore, he champions environmental sustainability through his foundation’s ambitious natural conservation project, Sierra a Mar, in Mexico.

Currently residing in Spain since last autumn, Gere's artistic journey started as a musician. He has shared that his father is the most influential person in his life, a source of inspiration for his latest film, "Oh Canada." As Gere prepares to receive the Goya International Award, this recognition not only celebrates his artistic contributions but also his unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
