Rino Gattuso Departs as Italy's Head Coach After World Cup Qualification Failure
Rino Gattuso has parted ways with the Italian national football team after mutual consent, following a disappointing failure to qualify for the World Cup. Italy, a four-time world champion, has now become the first reigning champion to miss out on the tournament three times in a row, after a heartbreaking shootout loss to Bosnia in the playoff finals on Tuesday.
In an emotional statement released by the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC), Gattuso expressed his sorrow about not achieving the team's goals: "With a heavy heart, having failed to achieve the goal we had set ourselves, I consider my time on the national team bench to be over."
The FIGC confirmed that Gattuso's contract has been mutually terminated. This decision comes in the wake of resignations from FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and Italy's delegation chief Gianluigi Buffon, another hero of Italy’s triumphant 2006 World Cup campaign.
Gattuso was appointed last June, taking over from Luciano Spalletti, who was dismissed after a poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Initially, the federation sought to hire Claudio Ranieri, but after he opted to remain with Roma, they turned to Gattuso, whose coaching resume included stints with well-known clubs like AC Milan, Napoli, and Valencia. However, his coaching career has not been exceptionally successful, aside from winning the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2019.
The former midfielder struggled to contain his emotions during a post-match interview after Italy lost to Bosnia. He apologized to the nation, struggling to articulate the pain of another missed opportunity for the Azzurri, who have not qualified for the last three World Cups.
"I apologize, but it’s unjust," he stated, defending his team's effort as they played most of the match with ten men after Alessandro Bastoni received a red card just before halftime. Gattuso praised his players’ determination and commitment despite the loss, affirming, "I’m proud of my guys. They gave everything."
This latest qualification failure marks a significant disappointment for Italy, who also missed out on the 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar. In both prior attempts, Italy came up short in crucial playoff matches, first losing to Sweden and then to North Macedonia.
In the recent match, Italy initially took the lead with a stunning strike from Moise Kean in the 15th minute. However, after Bastoni's dismissal, Italy faced relentless pressure from Bosnia, leading to an equalizer from Haris Tabakovic that forced the game into extra time. During the penalty shootout, Italy faltered, with Bosnia winning 4-1, as Italian substitutes Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante failed to convert their penalties.
As of now, Gattuso's departure signifies a major shift for Italy's football strategy and raises questions about the future direction of the national team as they seek to rebuild and regain their former glory.
