Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: Iran Accuses the US of Civilian Casualties
Early this morning, the Iranian military leveled accusations against the United States, claiming that the recent attack on two cargo ships off the coast of Oman resulted in the deaths of at least five civilians. This statement followed Washington's assertion that it had successfully destroyed Iranian fast boats in the region. An Iranian military source, quoted by the state agency Tasnim, indicated that after the US military's claim, investigations were conducted that ultimately found no IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) vessels had been targeted. Instead, the source alleged that the attack by the US military struck two merchant ships carrying civilians traveling from Khasab in Oman towards Iran, contradicting any claims that the victims were military personnel.
On Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated it had facilitated the transit of two merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, part of an operational strategy to escort vessels through this vital route. They claimed to have destroyed six Iranian fast boats that allegedly attempted to obstruct these passages.
Further complicating the situation, Iranian state media reported a fire breaking out on several merchant ships docked at Dayyer port, south of Iran. Majid Omrani, head of the Fire Department at Dayyer Port, informed the Mehr news agency that firefighters were actively working to control the situation, although the cause of the fire remains unclear.
Since the beginning of the ceasefire between the US and Iran three weeks ago, both nations have maintained a selective blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route through which 20% of the world’s fossil energy flows in peacetime. As of Monday, the US military reported that vessels from 87 different countries were impacted by the Iranian blockade while waiting for US escort to ensure their safe passage through the strait.
The White House denied any claims made by Iranian media regarding attacks on US military ships attempting to navigate through the Strait of Hormuz. In an optimistic update, it reported that two US warships successfully crossed into the Persian Gulf on Monday, despite being subjected to coordinated attacks from drones, missiles, and small boats allegedly linked to Iran. According to CBS News, defense officials have confirmed that US forces activated their protection systems and air support, which effectively neutralized attack attempts without any recorded hits.
In a recent statement, Iran conveyed a strong message regarding the escalating situation in Hormuz, asserting that there are "no military solutions to a political crisis." Tehran condemned the US military's presence in the strait and warned of the potential for new escalations as tensions and confrontations continue to rise in the area.
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, aware that the Strait of Hormuz remains a vital artery for global trade and energy supply. With both nations at odds and a history of incidents in the region, the potential for misunderstandings or escalations is significant, underscoring the need for diplomatic resolution.
