Robert De Niro to Receive Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2025
American actor Robert De Niro is set to receive the prestigious Honorary Palme d'Or at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, as announced by the organization on Monday. At 81 years old, De Niro will be honored during the opening ceremony of the 78th edition of the festival, taking place on May 13. Following the ceremony, he will participate in a master class at the Debussy Theatre, as stated in a festival press release.
The festival noted, "There are faces that represent the seventh art and dialogues that leave an indelible mark on cinema lovers. With his internalized style which manifests in a kind smile or a serious glance, Robert De Niro has become a legend of cinema." Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, De Niro shared his enthusiasm for the festival, mentioning that he once presided over its jury in 2011. "Now that there are so many things in the world that separate us, Cannes brings us together—storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It's like coming home," the New York-born actor remarked.
Throughout his illustrious career, De Niro has appeared in an impressive total of 121 films, including iconic titles such as "The Godfather Part II," "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull," and "Goodfellas." He has been awarded two Oscars: the first in 1975 for Best Supporting Actor for "The Godfather Part II," and the second in 1981 for Best Actor for his role in "Raging Bull."
Known for embodying tough characters, often mobsters or heart-wrenching outcasts, De Niro reinvented himself in the 1990s with diverse roles that ventured into comedy, such as in films like "Meet the Parents" and "Jackie Brown." Beyond his extensive acting career, De Niro has also taken on the role of organizer for the Tribeca Film Festival since 2002, aiming to revitalize New York in the wake of the September 11 attacks. This endeavor revealed another facet of his personality, highlighting his political commitment and dedication to storytelling.
As the Cannes Film Festival prepares to celebrate De Niro's contributions to cinema, the event promises to be a remarkable occasion for fans and filmmakers alike.
