Romanian Presidential Runoff: Rise of Far-Right Extremist Calin Georgescu

In a surprising turn of events, pro-Russian far-right extremist Calin Georgescu has advanced to the runoff election for the presidency of Romania, a NATO member state. Known for his anti-Western rhetoric and admiration for World War II-era Romanian fascists, Georgescu has captured a significant portion of the electorate's attention, particularly among youth on the popular social media platform TikTok.

In the first round of voting, Georgescu secured about 22 percent of the total votes, outperforming Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, who garnered just around 20 percent. This unexpected outcome may reflect growing economic uncertainties and societal tensions within Romania, which has approximately 19 million inhabitants and faces challenges as one of the poorest countries in Europe, bordering war-torn Ukraine to the north.

Georgescu’s campaign has largely been characterized by a sense of defiance against perceived humiliation and foreign invasion, echoing sentiments that resonate with certain segments of the Romanian populace. On election night, he declared via a Facebook broadcast, "The Romanian people have awakened to consciousness and expressed their will to no longer remain on their knees, no longer under invasion, no longer humiliated. Tonight, the Romanian people have called for peace,” likely alluding to Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine.

The upcoming runoff election is scheduled for December 8, coinciding with critical parliamentary elections set to take place just a week earlier. The political landscape leading to this runoff has been tumultuous. Georgescu received significant backing from George Simion, the fourth-placed candidate with 14 percent of the votes, who announced his support for Georgescu in the runoff.

Elena Lasconi, representing the conservative-liberal Reform Party and who came in third with approximately 19 percent of the votes, has not yet made a decision on which candidate to endorse. The dynamics of this presidential election could have significant implications for both the runoff and parliamentary elections.

Historically, the Romanian presidency holds considerable influence over foreign and defense policies and plays a role in overseeing intelligence agencies. Many analysts believe Georgescu’s performance in the first round may sway electoral outcomes in the parliamentary elections, as voter sentiment continues to shift amid economic instability.

Adding controversy to his candidacy, Georgescu is currently under investigation by Romanian authorities for allegedly glorifying fascist war crimes. Despite the ongoing investigation, media scrutiny appears limited. Commentators have pointed fingers at mainstream media and established politicians for failing to adequately counter the far-right narrative and political propaganda proliferating on social media platforms.

It is noteworthy that Calin Georgescu is often compared to the historical Romanian fascists known as the Legionnaires, reflecting his proclivity for using biblical quotes and championing the Orthodox Church, which resonate with some voters in Romania. His background as an agricultural scientist and veterinarian, alongside his previous affiliation with the far-right parliamentary party AUR, reveals a complex interplay of professional experience and radical political ideology.

As the runoff approaches, voters will be tasked with a critical decision that could influence Romania's domestic and foreign policies, especially in light of its geographic proximity to Ukraine and the broader geopolitical tensions at play. The ramifications of this presidential election extend beyond Romania’s borders, marking a period of uncertainty and potential shift in alliances within the European Union.
