Rome Braces for Pope Leo XIV's Inauguration with Enhanced Security
Over 5,000 police officers will be deployed in Rome for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV on May 18, according to Rome Prefect Lamberto Giannini. This large police presence mirrors the security measures taken during the recent funeral of Pope Francis. Giannini noted that due to the expected attendance of numerous faithful for the enthronement ceremony, they will implement similar protocols to ensure the safety of all participants.
"For the enthronement ceremony of the Pontiff, we anticipate a significant crowd," stated Giannini following the first Provincial Committee for order and security meeting after the election of Pope Leo XIV. He emphasized that over 5,000 law enforcement personnel will be involved.
The security strategy will not only include a high volume of police but also specialized units trained for various roles including public order management, snipers for surveillance, divers for water security, and air cover from the Air Force. Furthermore, measures will be taken to prevent any drone threats during the event.
The meticulous planning and deployment of resources underscore the importance of maintaining safety and order during such a significant religious occasion, as the Vatican prepares to welcome thousands of attendees from around the world.
