Russia and North Korea Reinforce Their Alliance Amidst Ongoing Conflict
In a demonstration of their unwavering alliance, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during a recent parade in Beijing, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific. The meeting came on the heels of both leaders attending the event alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Kim Jong-un expressed Pyongyang's commitment to supporting Russia, stating, "If there is anything we can do to help Russia, we will certainly do it and consider it our duty as a brother. We will do everything necessary to help Russia," according to reports from the Interfax agency.
Highlighting the deepening ties, Kim recalled the partnership agreement signed with Putin in June 2024, which includes a mutual defense clause in the event of aggression. He noted that the relationship between the countries has strengthened significantly, with military collaboration playing a pivotal role. "We have fought alongside the brother people and army of Russia within the framework of this treaty and in fulfillment of our obligations under this treaty," he declared.
Putin, in turn, praised North Korean forces for their involvement in military operations aimed at reclaiming the Kursk region from Ukrainian troops. "Your special forces participated in the liberation of the Kursk region in full accordance with our agreements. They fought bravely and heroically," Putin acknowledged.
During this engagement, Putin expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by North Korean soldiers, stressing that Russia will always remember their contributions. This statement comes amidst reports estimating a significant number of casualties among North Koreans in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, with South Korean intelligence suggesting that around 2,000 North Korean soldiers have died in the war, a figure notably increased from the 600 reported earlier this year.
The National Intelligence Service of South Korea (NIS) indicated that about 15,000 North Korean military personnel have been sent to Russia, with a new contingent of approximately 6,000 soldiers reportedly being organized, which includes around 1,000 sapper troops already deployed to the front lines.
As the relationship between Russia and North Korea deepens, both nations appear resolute in their mutual support amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape. This alliance could have far-reaching implications for the region and beyond as both countries navigate the complexities of their partnerships in military and economic contexts.
