Russia Launches Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine, Escalating Conflict
In one of its largest aerial assaults since the onset of the full-scale invasion, Russia executed a remarkable attack, deploying nearly 1,000 drones against Ukraine over a 24-hour period from March 23 to March 24, 2023. This extensive barrage targeted various regions, including the western parts of the nation.
The strikes resumed during the day on March 24, following a lethal night of missile and drone assaults. Over 550 attack drones were unleashed, primarily aimed at central and western Ukraine, leading to chaos and tragedy. At least three individuals lost their lives, and more than 30 were injured in this daylight offensive, a grim addition to the overnight toll of four deaths and 21 injuries, as reported by local authorities.
In the western city of Lviv, renowned for its historical significance, 17 people sustained injuries when drones struck civilian areas not far from the Polish border. Notably, the UNESCO-listed Bernardine Monastery complex, a landmark of national importance located in Lviv's historic center, suffered damage. Lviv's regional Governor, Maksym Kozytskyi, confirmed the attack on this architectural jewel, which dates back to the early 17th century. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault, calling it an "absolute perversion," particularly as modernized Iranian Shahed drones targeted sacred sites like the church in Lviv.
Russia's strikes also extended their reach to critical infrastructure facilities in various districts, including Ivano-Frankivsk, where two individuals were reported dead in an attack in the city center and four others were injured, including a six-year-old child. Damages were also reported to maternity hospitals and residential buildings in the vicinity.
Explosions reverberated across Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr, as attacks intensified across western and central Ukraine. In one such incident, a 12-year-old girl was hospitalized due to injuries from a strike in Zhytomyr.
Kyiv and its surrounding areas were also under siege during the daylight attacks, with Ukraine's Air Force detecting drones approaching from the North. Serhii Flash, an advisor to Ukraine's Defense Ministry, indicated that Russia is consistently altering its tactics in these massive strikes, attempting to exploit vulnerabilities within Ukraine's air defense systems.
President Zelenskyy addressed the nation, emphasizing that the scale of the Russian offensive signaled Moscow's unyielding commitment to the conflict. He stated, "When you consider that Russia is also assisting the Iranian regime in launching strikes across the region, it is evident that, without significant pressure on Russia and tangible losses for them, Moscow will remain resistant to peace and unwilling to retreat from this war."
The ongoing hostilities underscore a grim reality for Ukraine, further complicating the already dire humanitarian situation and highlighting the urgent need for international support and a unified response to deter Russia's aggression.
