Russian Restrictions Impact Tajik Migrant Workers

Over the last six months, approximately 3400 Tajik migrant workers have been denied entry into Russia and sent back to Tajikistan from Russian airports. The director of the Tajik Civil Aviation Agency, Habibullo Nazarzoda, revealed this information to reporters on July 24. The reason behind the denial of entry was attributed to alleged issues with the workers' documents. The strained relations between the two countries escalated when Russia arrested multiple Tajik nationals suspected of involvement in a terrorist attack at an entertainment center near Moscow, which resulted in the tragic death of over 140 individuals in late March. Since this incident, Tajik migrant workers have encountered heightened restrictions both within Russia and during their travels to the country. The mounting challenges faced by Tajik migrant workers reflect a larger issue of security concerns overshadowing migrant labor policies in the region, impacting thousands of individuals seeking livelihood opportunities abroad.
