Ryanair Takes Legal Action Against Disruptive Passenger on Dublin to Lanzarote Flight
Ryanair has initiated legal proceedings against a passenger involved in an incident that disrupted a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote, seeking €15,000 (approximately $15,500) in damages. The airline claims the passenger’s behavior on board last April was nothing short of 'inexcusable and completely unacceptable.' This action was confirmed by Ryanair on Wednesday when they announced that the case had been filed in Dublin's circuit court.
The airline explained that the sought damages would cover additional expenses incurred when the flight was diverted to Porto, Portugal. Specifically, the costs related to overnight accommodation and other necessities that had to be provided for the 160 people onboard as a result of the diversion. Ryanair emphasized that the passenger's reckless behavior not only delayed the flight overnight but also significantly disrupted the holiday plans of fellow travelers.
In a statement, a Ryanair spokesperson remarked, 'It is unacceptable that passengers—many of whom are heading away with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday—are suffering unnecessary disruption and reduced holiday time as a result of one unruly passenger’s behavior.' The spokesperson further noted that the airline would take rigorous measures to combat such conduct on flights.
This legal move comes amidst broader efforts by airlines, including Ryanair, to curb unruly passenger incidents. The airline expressed hope that the civil proceedings would serve as a strong deterrent against such disruptive actions in the future. The identity of the passenger involved has not been disclosed.
Under European Union regulations, passengers are entitled to compensation if flights are canceled or delayed by three hours or more. In cases requiring an overnight stay due to such delays, airlines are mandated to provide hotel accommodation at no charge, along with transportation between the hotel and the airport, as well as meals and refreshments.
