Sánchez Demands Inclusion of Lebanon in Ceasefire as Violence Escalates
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has intensified his calls for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire agreement recently brokered among the US, Israel, and Iran. This plea follows a significant escalation in violence, particularly after Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu ordered what is described as the largest attack on Lebanon since the conflict commenced.
The United States has maintained that Lebanon does not fall under the ceasefire provisions, citing the alleged presence of Hizbollah as justification for the recent strikes. In response, Sánchez has taken to X, Elon Musk's social platform, where his comments quickly garnered over half a million views and 30,000 likes in under an hour.
In his post, Sánchez expressed outrage, stating, "Their disregard for life and international law is intolerable. It’s time to speak clearly," emphasizing the need for immediate action related to the ongoing violence. He put forth four key demands: 1) Lebanon must be part of the ceasefire; 2) the international community must condemn this new violation of international law; 3) the EU must suspend its Association Agreement with Israel; and 4) there should be no impunity for these criminal acts.
Prominent British journalist Owen Jones highlighted Sánchez’s leadership, commenting on the post with the phrase, "Pedro Sánchez has become the leader of Europe." This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of Sánchez's position amidst a backdrop of turmoil.
Sánchez is not alone in his condemnation; following announcements of a two-week ceasefire, former Portuguese Secretary of State for European Affairs, Bruno Maçães, commended the Spanish leader for his ability to conceptualize beyond immediate events, suggesting that he stands out as the only European leader with a clear vision in this crisis.
The situation in Lebanon is dire, with reports indicating that more than 700 individuals have been injured and nearly 90 lives lost due to a recent bombardment. Notably, on Wednesday, Israel launched 160 cluster bombs in a mere 10 minutes, marking an unprecedented wave of attacks as the war continues. As the world watches, the urgent need for a comprehensive ceasefire that includes Lebanon has never been more critical.
