The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued red level warnings for heavy rain in Almería this Sunday, December 14, with forecasts predicting up to 120 liters per square meter in the first twelve hours. In addition, an orange warning is set for Granada and yellow alerts for Cádiz. Red alert warnings for wave activity have also been implemented along the entire Andalusian coastline, with the exception of Huelva. According to Aemet and information from Europa Press, the red warning for precipitation extends across the Almerian region of Valle del Almanzora from 6:00 AM until the end of the day. An orange warning will apply from midnight until 6:00 AM, while Los Vélez, Nacimiento, and Campo de Tabernas will face similar alerts during the same timeframe, with accompanying storms prompting a yellow alert level. In these impacted areas, accumulations of up to 30 liters per square meter are anticipated within one hour, and up to 100 liters per square meter within the first twelve hours. Valle de Almanzora is expected to see accumulations reach up to 120 liters per square meter. Simultaneously, rain and storms are set to affect the areas of Poniente, Almería capital, and Levante, with yellow warnings indicated for these regions. The storms here are forecast to leave accumulations of up to 20 liters per square meter in one hour and a total of up to 60 liters per square meter over the first twelve hours. The Granada region, specifically Guadix and Baza, is also under an orange alert for heavy rainfall, with expectations of 15 liters per square meter in one hour and up to 80 liters per square meter throughout the day, beginning at midnight. Cádiz province will continue to experience rain for the third day in a row, with a yellow alert issued in El Estrecho from midnight until 12:00 PM on Sunday, forecasting 40 liters per square meter in the first twelve hours along with storms. Wave activity is another concern, with yellow level warnings activated until 12:00 PM in Poniente, Almería capital, the Granada coast, Sol, Guadalhorce, and Málaga Axarquía. These coastal regions should brace for east winds of 50 to 65 kilometers per hour, classified as force 7, along with waves reaching three to four meters. Warnings of coastal phenomena will persist in Cádiz, with alerts in El Estrecho and the coastline until 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM respectively, where easterly winds of 50-61 km/h are anticipated, qualifying as force 7. The 112 emergency service has recommended extreme caution amidst this forecasted weather. In light of potential storms and heavy precipitation, travelers are advised to avoid road travel unless necessary. If travel is unavoidable, it is crucial to check road statuses prior to departure and adhere to all road directives and recommendations provided by officials. When driving in rainy conditions, drivers should reduce speed and increase the following distance. It is crucial to avoid crossing flooded areas, and if unexpectedly caught in rising waters, one should be ready to exit the vehicle if the water exceeds the axle. Camping or parking near rivers, even when dry, is ill-advised to avoid sudden flooding. During storms, it is important to avoid isolated trees and rocks, as these can attract lightning. Coastal safety is also emphasized; avoid promenades, breakwaters, and lookouts, as waves can be surprisingly dangerous. In homes, individuals should relocate to higher floors in case of rising water levels and avoid basements and garages. In emergencies, citizens are advised to call the Unified Emergency Telephone 112, which is accessible 24/7 throughout the year. Further self-protection guidelines and resources can be found on the Emergency Platform for Citizens. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
