Severe Weather Warning: DANA to Impact Balearic Islands and Northern Spain
The DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) is set to affect the Balearic Islands with significant intensity this Thursday, particularly in Mallorca, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). A red alert has been issued due to the extremely adverse weather conditions expected early Thursday morning. Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary as regular activities may face substantial disruptions.
A general instability is likely to increase throughout the archipelago, with forecasts indicating heavy precipitation and storms, especially during the first half of the day. Localized hail and strong gusts of wind are also possible, but the most notable concern remains the intensity and efficiency of the rainfall. Meteorologists predict accumulations that could exceed torrential levels, surpassing 60 mm per hour in certain areas.
In Catalonia, strong showers and storms are anticipated throughout the day as well. Morning storms are expected along the central coast, migrating northward in the afternoon, while the eastern third of the peninsula and southern Iberian system may also be affected. Fortunately, forecasts indicate that instability is likely to diminish by Friday, though some heavy showers and storms could linger in the Balearic archipelago. By Saturday, the meteorological risk should end completely, with the DANA expected to have moved toward Italy.
As the DANA dissipates, the respite from high temperatures will also conclude. Most regions will experience sunshine this Thursday, albeit with generally moderate temperatures. However, temperatures are projected to rise again on Friday and Saturday, with some areas like Cáceres, Badajoz, Córdoba, and Seville potentially reaching or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
For the remaining weeks of August, a hot and dry weather pattern is anticipated, especially during the week of the 19th to the 25th. Residents and travelers in these regions should remain vigilant and stay updated on the latest weather alerts as the situation evolves.
