Socialist Member Resigns Amid Controversy Over Compromising Audios
Leire Díez, a member of Spain's Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), made headlines this Tuesday after a nearly two-hour meeting at the party's headquarters in Madrid. She attended the meeting to discuss controversial audio recordings in which she is allegedly heard asking for sensitive information regarding the UCO (Central Operational Unit).
During her appearance before the designated investigator from the PSOE, sources close to the party revealed that Díez has requested her voluntary resignation from the party. Following this meeting, she is set to hold a press conference this Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Novotel Hotel in Madrid to address the situation.
Upon her arrival at the Ferraz headquarters, Díez did not engage with the crowd of reporters waiting outside, merely expressing gratitude to those who have supported her. She claimed to have brought more than 2,000 documents to substantiate her case and provide evidence.
As of now, the Socialist Party has refrained from implementing any precautionary measures while the matter remains under investigation. This follows the party's earlier decision to open an information file on May 28, as reported by Cadena SER. The PSOE maintains that the statements made in the leaked audios do not represent the party's official stance but reflect Díez’s personal opinions.
The party also indicated that any organizational decisions regarding her status will be on hold until her resignation is processed. As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes will be on the press conference to hear Díez's side of the story.
